Nonexistent Stage (2022)
Project Location: Sanfeng Temple, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
The Mission
Reimagine a traditional Taiwanese opera, which may be at risk of disappearing, through modern stage design and spatial planning to enable a contemporary reinterpretation.
The Challenge
The challenge was how to make an old performance style resonate with a modern audience. The goal was not only to achieve entertainment success, but also to create a meaningful dialogue between the opera’s depth and contemporary daily life, considering how space could make this possible.
The Outcome
A performance environment was created around Sanfeng Temple in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where audiences can experience an immersive journey through the neighborhood during festivals. At the same time, the performance stage doubles as a usable space for residents in everyday life.
